Hunting is also a very popular activity in Eeyou Istchee Baie-James. In the heart of the region's wilderness where the boreal forest turns progressively into taiga, you feel you can see forever. Large and small game, waterfowl, and migrating birds - alone or as part of a group, hunt your prey of choice. As for the caribou hunt, it is truly the thrill-seeking hunter's ultimate experience. The region's two herds - at Rivière aux Feuilles and Rivière George - provide an exceptional and internationally renowned hunting experience.
REGULATIONS RESPECTING FISHING AND HUNTING AREAS
Quebec’s Natural Ressources and Wildlife Ministry releases numerous publications, including«Winter Caribou Hunting in Québec»which list the rules and regulations to be followed in addition to advices on safety. They also include variousmaps indicating hunting zones.
LAND CATEGORIES I AND II
To hunt in the James Bay region, visitors must respect the laws governing hunting on the James Bay and New-Quebec territories. The James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, ratified in 1975, stipulates privileged land tenure rights on the territory. Consequently, land categories I and II are strictly reserved for First Nations use. You must obtain proper authorization from the governing band counsel for any hunting.
LAND CATEGORY III
However, hunting ispermitted in category III land as per the rules elsewhere in Quebec, with one exception: trapping and hunting fur animals is strictly forbidden. North of the 52nd parallel, non-residents of Quebec must use the services of an outfitter.
BIG GAME DRAWS
Random draws for hunting big game are held annually. Hunters can enter two types of random draws: 1. To obtain a limited-access hunting license (moose cow, antlerless deer, 1st harvest antlerless deer or caribou) or, 2. To obtain a hunting stay in a wildlife sanctuary. Each draw is subject to specific rules. For more information, please contact SEPAQ at 418-890-6527 or at 1-800-665-6527.
